
Born in May 1934 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joel was the only child of Julius and Helen Broida of Oil City, Pennsylvania.
After earning his Masters degree from University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Public Health from Johns Hopkins, Joel worked to reduce food and health insecurity for others during his 35-year career as a researcher with the United States Public Health Service. Joel worked on numerous community projects, including serving as an election judge with his wife, setting up food pantries, serving as one of the founding presidents of his Jewish congregation, plus leading and participating in numerous local humanitarian and philanthropic efforts.
Joel leaves his wife of over 60 years. Gail, his sons David and Michael (Leslie Anderson), and his grandchild, Sofia, as well as extended family and dear friends. May his memory be a blessing.
