John Hyde Perine passed away on May 4th in the morning. He was kind, hilarious, gentle, and humble. He always protected his family. He always took such loving care of his wife, Marjorie, who passed away in February 2022. His kindness touched many people. There are so many stories of him helping his family, friends and even people he barely knew. Everyone loved John, and John liked most people. When he was still working, people would say, “If John doesn’t like someone, something must be wrong with them.”
He was born on August 23, 1942 in Huntington, NY and was raised on a farm in Ashton, MD. For college he attended Cornell University followed by Stanford University for graduate school. As a child he would mail letters to aviation companies and ask for information about their planes. He wanted to be an aeronautical engineer and eventually an astronaut. In the fourth year of his five year program, he realized he wanted to be an AE 20 years before. While at Cornell John was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and he sang with an acapella group called the Sherwoods. With the Sherwoods, John performed all over the world in USO tours and at Carnegie Hall. The Sherwoods were his lifelong brothers. Every year until recently John would get together with the guys and perform.
While in graduate school he met his future wife, Marjorie. They were introduced at a mutual friend’s Thanksgiving party and hit it off. It didn’t hurt that John brought his guitar to the dinner, played music and sang. Their love story lasted a lifetime.
John and Marjorie eventually moved to Bethesda, MD and started a family in the early 1980’s. They had two children, Thomas and Angela. John’s musical talent reached far and wide in Maryland. He sang with the Victorian Lyric Opera (VLOC) and he performed countless times at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater in Rockville, MD. He particularly enjoyed the silliness of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and he performed in H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and Iolanthe to name a few. John sang the patter song “I am a modern Major-General” to perfection.
John is a direct descendant of Daniel Perrin the Huguenot. He is survived by his sister, Susan, his two children Thomas and Angela, three grandsons, Thomas John, Aiden, and Daniel, and one great-grandson Kayden.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you perform acts of kindness for others in loving memory of John.
