June Marie Barclay (nee Mighty) of Hyattsville, MD passed away at home on Wednesday July 2, 2025 at the age of 81. June was born in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica on June 12, 1944 to Enos and Una Mighty. Growing up, June lived in May Pen, Jamaica and attended May Pen Primary School followed by Clarendon College, both in Jamaica. Education, hard work, and devotion to God were core tenants of her life.
Carving her own path, June migrated to the United States on August 13, 1967 and over time many family members followed. Initially working as a nanny at the French Guinea Embassy in Washington, DC, June made a positive impact wherever she worked, including Woodward and Lothrop Department Store, Hariri Foundation, and the DC Child and Family Services Agency.
Called to service, June was a member of Shiloh Christian Fellowship and attended services regularly. In addition, she was a consistent contributor to and volunteer for the Shiloh Christian Fellowship Food Pantry. Family and the broader Jamaican community were cornerstones in her life. She loved dinners and celebrations with extended family.
While her recent years were impacted by the effects of dementia, it didn’t stop her kind smile and witty declarations about life around her.
June is survived by her loving husband, Winston (Michael) Barclay, of 27 years and her only son, Peter Maye (husband, John George, grandson, Isaac George), brother Lincoln (wife Dorothy) Mighty, sister Audrey (husband Wellington) Williams, brother Carlton (wife Donna) Mighty, and many nieces and nephews, and many friends. June was a godsend to her grandson and family, caring for Isaac afterschool and accompanying him to afterschool activities for many years.
The family would like to thank Medstar Washington Hospital Center for their care and Medstar Health for their positive interventions during her hospitalization. June was blessed to have such wonderful caregivers over time and in her final days, Nancy, Sharon, Paula, and Michele.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at People’s Community Baptist Church on July 18, 2025 at 11:00 am located at 31 Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD 20905. The service will be followed by a repast at the church.
