

MAYDIE BAKER HUGHES On May 23, 2014, Maydie went home peacefully to be with God after a seven year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was predeceased by her husband, George Richard Hughes. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Hughes Doherty, son-in-law Sean Doherty, grandchildren Vera and Daniel Doherty, sister Lillian Ballard, brothers Earl Baker, Jesse Baker and Lester Baker and many nieces and nephews. Maydie was born on April 5, 1930 in Pitt County, North Carolina. She moved from North Carolina as a young child and lived in the Washington, D.C. area for over 80 years. She graduated from Mount Ranier High School in 1948 and went on to a 43 year career with the federal government to include service with the Department of the Interior, NASA and the National Science Foundation. She won many awards during her federal career to include recognition from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967 for contributions to the U.S. space program. She was married to George R. Hughes, an attorney in Maryland from 1959 until his death in 1987. She loved to dance, socialize with friends and loved her pet dogs Jake, Jenny and Ginger. She was happy that she had the opportunity to travel abroad to England and Italy prior to her diagnosis of Alzheimer's in 2007. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 27 from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by a Christian Memorial Service at 3 p.m. at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Chapel located at 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904. A catered reception will immediately follow for friends and relatives at Holy Family Seminary Hall located at 401 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904. Burial on Wednesday at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
