Michael Whitfield Jecko, “Zeke”, 79, passed away on Thursday, May 20th, 2021 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Mike was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, the son of Perry and Cora Jecko. Mike graduated in 1959 from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, went on to study at Yale University, and graduated in 1963 with degrees in electrical engineering and business administration.
Mike is survived by his four children, M. Scott Jecko and his wife Judy, Audrey Coulbourn and her husband Danny, Mike Jecko, Jr., and his wife Laura, and Brittany Jecko; and his step-children Holly Steiner and Scott Severn. He will be missed by his four grandchildren Austin Jecko, Haley and Mary Coulbourn, and baby Viggo Jecko, and his great grandchildren Asa and Madeline Jecko; and his loving wife of 37 years, Susan Jecko. He is preceded in death by his brother, Timothy Jecko. Mike is also survived by a large community of friends who loved him dearly, members of his high school group “The Saints”, his college buddies “the Dekes”, Washington Redskins football tailgaters, Touchdown Club members, and the Manor Country Club crew.
Mike had a long and successful career working at GE, PEPCO, the Rouse Company, and Accenture.
But his greatest loves in life were his family, his friends, and Susan. Those who spent time with Mike knew of his love for tennis and the Washington Redskins; his affection for a 5 p.m. happy hour; the peace he felt at the beach; his uncanny ability to solve any problem with a chart and a spreadsheet; his masterful social event organizing skills; that he was on a first name basis with everyone he met; his door was always open and his home always filled with friends; he could turn any event into something that involved betting brackets; and he loved a good joke. He met his greatest love, Susan, in 1983 and spent 38 years with her as his constant companion. Together, they raised six children, loving and supporting them through highs and lows, and taking great pride in their accomplishments. Mike laughed a lot, whistled constantly, was well known for his trademarked “Jecko Shuffle” dance, and was always planning for the next time he could spend time with those he loved.
An informal reception will be held at the Bethesda Marriott, Cooper Mill restaurant from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27th. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Friday, May 28th at 10:30 A.M., followed by a private family service at the Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a tribute donation to the Alzheimer’s Association for continued research and support of those who struggle with the disease.
