In loving memory of Nick Rakis, 93, who passed away peacefully in Silver Spring, Maryland, on April 29, 2025. His journey began in the village of Kardamyla on the island of Chios, Greece. He overcame great hardship, having been orphaned at the age of six along with his four older siblings.
With few economic opportunities in his village, Nick followed the path of many Kardamylans and went to sea. At just 14, he took his first job aboard a merchant ship, beginning what would become a 15 year career at sea. Through hard work and determination, he rose to the rank of chief mate on deck, navigating the world’s oceans before immigrating to the United States in 1960 in search of a better future. He moved to New York City and eventually found his way to Washington, DC.
In 1965, Nick married Pauline Summar, his beloved wife of 60 years, and together they built a life centered on family, community and work. They raised three children—George, Anthony, and Angela—instilling in them the values of hard work, resilience, and the importance of family.
Nick became a respected general contractor. A “Jack of All Trades,” Nick was known for the quality of his craftsmanship and, more importantly, for his generosity. More than just a builder, he was a mentor—helping countless fellow immigrants enter the trade, many of whom went on to start their own successful businesses. Those he worked with called him "Mastora," a title of respect that reflects his mastery of his craft and his role as a teacher to so many.
Nick’s greatest passion was family, both his own and the communities he created wherever he went. Having grown up without one, he dedicated his life to building the family he never had as a child. He never sat idle, always finding joy in hard work, meaningful connections, and simple pleasures—whether it was gathering with loved ones, toiling in his beloved garden (while chasing away rabbits!) or fishing on the beach in Ocean City, MD.
Nick’s legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. “The Big Guy” as he was called by family members will be remembered for his strength, kindness, and the unwavering love he gave to those around him. And, of course, his remarkable storytelling!
Nick is survived by his wife, Pauline and his children George Rakis (Sheila), Anthony Rakis (Elizabeth), Angela Rakis and 6 grandchildren Nicholas, John Patrick, Daniel, Lexi, Sophia and Niko. He is predeceased by his brothers Petro and Manoli and his sisters Diamanda and Evgenia.
