Nina Hemmo Manachi, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, passed away on August 1, 2025, at age 85. She is survived by her husband, Gabriel Manachi, to whom she was married for nearly 55 years. Her brother, Lucien Hemmo, predeceased her. Nina was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, where among other adventures, she appeared as an actress in several movies under the screen name Rawya El-Gammal. She immigrated to the United States in 1964, where she met her husband. Nina worked in the fashion industry in Washington, D.C., including the Elizabeth Arden store, the women’s clothing store Rizik’s, and as a personal fashion advisor. Nina led a life full of unusual experiences, from belly-dancing to acting to helping dress Washington’s society ladies. She could be counted on to do or say the unexpected, and was known for her ability to make people laugh. Nina made every gathering more lively and fun.
A graveside service will be held at 3pm on Monday August 4 at Mount Lebanon Cemetery.
