Ron was raised in Newkirk, OK. His first job was working for his parent’s grocery store, “Dale’s Foodland” where inspiring stories about his dad Dale’s innovation and people skills were instilled in our Dad. Growing up, we visited Oklahoma on vacations and saw the farms he grew up on. Those memories keep us grounded in our family roots. Ron was active in high school, playing drums and winning the Tri-State competition and Sargent Golf Handicap championship. He served as the senior class president and valedictorian. He received a BS in Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a commission as an army officer. He was granted deferments to work on his engineering master’s degree and work for NASA on the Saturn Space program in Alabama. Ron found a rewarding military assignment at the National Security Agency (NSA) and accepted employment as a civilian. Some of his work is in the National Cryptologic Museum. He retired from the NSA after 30 years, became a contractor and got remarried to Gail Ehrenfried of Rockville, MD for 22 years. Their wedding was special on all sides and we were happy he had a loving marriage to Gail to share dancing, golfing, fishing – particularly with a fly rod and sports of all kind. He had a passion for fine art, too.
When Ron first moved to Fort Meade, MD, he found strong friendships with his neighbors at the time, Don and Joan Spear that turned into family holiday and special occasion traditions for over 50 years. He spoke fondly of his NSA co-workers and groomsmen Bill Bennett and Neil Parrot. Ron was known for capturing family pictures, giving fun cards with a sharp sense of humor, golfing with Chris, shopping with Kelye, his loyalty, generous heart and cheering us all on in life. He was a Dad that loved celebration and often toasted to “kin” – family and relations. Our Dad really was a national treasure for our country and family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Fisher House, First Tee or National Cryptologic Museum Foundation. Condolences may be left at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, with the visitation and service held on Sunday, November 7@ 11am - 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20904. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens @ 2pm.
