Born in Haeju, Korea, March 29, 1949 as the 4th child of Song Ok Nyo and Kim Yong Hoon. When the Korean War reached their town, her mother and oldest sister (aged 9) took turns carrying baby Song Ju and caring for her other siblings as they fled the violence. Her family settled in Incheon, South Korea, where her parents had two more siblings.
Song Ju Kim graduated high school and was determined to become a teacher. During the day, she worked for Song Hui’s family as a housekeeper and nanny. At night, she attended school and studied. After earning her teaching certificate, she moved to the city of Cheorwon-gun to teach at Dong Song Elementary School in 1969. There, in 1973, she met and fell in love with a transferred teacher, Moo Young Chun
Song Ju Kim and Moo Young Chun were married in 1976. Song immigrated to the United States first in 1976 and Moo followed in 1977 settling in Falls Church, VA. Song and Moo welcomed a son, Peter, in 1978 and a daughter, Kimberly, in 1980. In 1985, Moo and Song became homeowners and moved to Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1987, Song began working part-time at a nearby sandwich counter in Forest Glen Deli. When the opportunity arose the following year, Song and Moo became business partners, co-owners and operators of this business.
They worked tirelessly to support their family and become part of the community that the business serves. Song and Moo worked 362 days a year and were extremely proud to put both of their children through college. Song loved being a small business owner and serving so many people. Her customers became her friends, and she loved them all like her own family.
Song was a lifelong learner. She studied art, history, and various cultures. She enjoyed going to different art museums downtown. She loved exploring and traveling with Moo. They traveled to many state and national parks, Canada, Europe, and Turkey.
Song was an avid hiker. For many years, she and Moo would hike the Billy Goat trail at Great Falls, Catoctin Mountain, Sugarloaf, and Old Rag Mountain on the weekends and spend the few days off they had each year hiking at nearby state parks. She regularly hiked three miles on the Northwest Branch and Sligo Creek trails from her home to her business.
Song’s final resting place is Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens 12800 Veirs Mill Rd, Rockville, MD 20853.
