Allyn John Foss

6 novembre 193724 janvier 2021

On January 24, 2021, Allyn Foss of Embden, Maine (and Zephyrhills, Florida) passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 83. He fought pancreatic cancer for over four years, which, due to his strength of mind and body and his general stubbornness, made him an example of success by his doctors for that lousy disease. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, kids Allyn Foss II, Julie Bjorkman, Kristen LaPierre, Greig Patterson, and Jeff Patterson, grandkids Emma and AJ Foss and Brett and Hanna Bjorkman.

Allyn was born an only child in Morrisville, VT to John and Helen Foss and raised on a dairy farm. He made it through UVM and worked various jobs until he became a high school teacher (social studies and comparative cultures) in Cheshire, CT. He was married and had two children (Allyn and Julie). He divorced and later found the love of his life in Sharon and added to his family with her kids (Kristen, Greig, and Jeff).

Allyn's other love was hunting and related outdoor activities, which he shared with Bud and Wayne Hurst and the late Charlie Bernard. Most important to him was time spent with his many friends and family. Upon retiring, he and Sharon moved to Embden and lived their dream together.

In lieu of services, the family hopes you recall and enjoy fond memories of Allyn.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. Anyone who wishes to leave the family messages can do so on our website at – www.smartandedwardsfh.com

How does one describe Al Foss? It's tough because he had so many talents and was so deeply human. As a start there were honesty, loyalty, and bravery. He was honest, not only in those ordinary transactions in life, but in the way he assessed life. He had the bravery to face up to an honest assessment of life. It didn't require his and Sharon's wonderful concoction, "fuzzy navel", to emerge, it was there all the time. He would help a friend to his own detriment, working hours to get our reluctant generator going for Mary Ann while John was away doing some fool hardy thing in DC. He was decent in the big sense, for example respecting the animals which he hunted. He was a complete and fully skilled person. We always said that comes a cataclysm we wanted to be with Al because he'd figure out what to do, and do it. Our lives were greatly dimmed when he and Sharon left the wilds of Connecticut for Maine. The world is greatly dimmed now that he has passed.

My father, Adair Alan Graves, passed away almost 2 years ago. His mother was Lonie Foss Graves. My dad , Allyn's cousin, was a man who often said more by what he chose not to say... so when he spoke highly of someone it spoke volumes. I know Allyn mostly from the look in my dad's eyes when he shared stories from their youth, but more importantly from meeting Allyn and the Maine side of our family as an adult. Nothing but class, generosity and intelligence to be found. We share appreciation for Allyn's life, and grief for your loss.

Sharon and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I feel very privileged to have known Allyn. I loved his adventurous spirit and the fight he had for life. His conversations were one of a kind and he always made me a smile. Without a doubt he was very proud of his family. Please take care of yourselves through this difficult time.

Allyn was a wonderful man and we truly enjoyed his stories and friendship. There were many years that he came to New Brunswick with his hunting buddies and we always looked forward to our time with him and friends. We also enjoyed our visits with you folks in Emden and your beautiful property. We send our love and condolences to you and your family at this time and will treasure the memories we have of Allyn.
