Skowhegan- Rev. Cecil L. Jones, 92, formerly of Norridgewock went to be with the Lord on August 31, 2010 with his loving family by his side.
He was born on Dodlin Road in Norridgewock on June 15, 1918. A son of the late Carl and Gertrude (Clark) Jones.
Cecil worked in his younger years at area farms and later as a truck driver for Norrwock Shoe for many years; he entered the ministry at the age of 52 and was ordained as a Reverend on October 27, 1992. He was very dedicated to his ministry. He pastored the Norridgewock Federated Church for 19 years. After he retired from the church he then served as an interim pastor in Belgrade, Sidney and various other towns. Cecil also served as Chaplain at Redington Fairview General Hospital for many years. His last service was Easter Sunday in 2008. Cecil preformed all of his grandchildren’s wedding ceremonies, the last being for his grandson Brian in May of this year. Cecil was very well known for his booming voice and his beautiful singing. In his younger years he could be heard singing on the local radio. He was often heard singing to his beloved wife before going to sleep each night; he was still singing the day before he died. Cecil greatly enjoyed ministering to many whether it was through church sermons, weddings, funerals or counseling. He also enjoyed going out to eat with family, golfing and music.
Cecil is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 71 years Beatrice “Bea” Julia Jones; three sons; Leroy Jones and wife Dollis of Waldoboro and their four children Beth, Mark, Kimi, and Chad, Larry Jones and wife Brenda of Norridgewock and their three children Scott, Tammy, and Ryan, Vurle Jones and wife Denise of Skowhegan, whom they made their home with for the past 8 ½ years; and their five children Michael, Denise, Tracy, Todd J., Todd H., and a daughter Sharon Dodge of Norridgewock and her three children Brian, Brandi, and Aimee, and 30 great grandchildren and one on the way, a sister Arlene Hilton who is 99 years old of Madison, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Cecil was predeceased by a son Wayne Allen Jones, 2 sisters; Goldie and Irene and by 2 brothers; Percy and Ralph.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation to all of those whom have taken care of Cecil over the years, the staff at Redington Fairview General Hospital, Holly and Roberta with Hospice, Elder Independence, and especially Pam Walker with Assistance Plus who has taken care of Cecil for the past 2 years.
Visitation will be held at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home on Thursday, September 2, from 1-3 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held at the Norridgewock Community Baptist Church on Friday, September 3, at 11 am, committal to follow at Riverview Cemetery in Norridgewock. Those wishing to send memorial donations in lieu of flowers may do so to the Skowhegan Hospice or a charity of their choice.
