Cecile A. (Couture) Dugas, 86, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Pittsfield Nursing and Rehab in Pittsfield with daughters by her side. She was born in Winslow on August 17, 1927 the second child of the late William and Elizabeth (Dusty) Couture.
Cecile attended Waterville schools graduating from Waterville High in 1945. After high school she worked for her father in the family business, W. A. Taylor, Inc. and later as a telephone operator for New England Telephone Co. On May 6, 1950 Cecile married Lawrence “Larry” Dugas in Waterville. They made their home in Skowhegan. Cecile was employed as a switchboard operator at Norrwock Shoe Co. in Skowhegan. She took several years off to raise her twin daughters. She returned to work, and will be remembered for working in the fabric department at Cranes Department Store. She was employed at Notre Dame Credit Union for several years, but her heart was in retail. She worked at Woolworth’s in Skowhegan until her retirement.
She loved sewing and could always be found at her sewing machine making something special for a family member or friends. She always said when she retired, she was going to sew a quilt. She accomplished that by sewing her first quilt by hand and went on to make several others. When the twins were young, she was involved in Girl Scouting. She was a 60 year member of the Daughters of Isabella. At the age of 72 she took up tap dancing and joined the “Skowhegan Showstoppers”.
Cecile is survived by her twin daughters, Sally Greeley and husband Thomas of Pittsfield, Susan Hart and husband Galen of Pittsfield. Five grandchildren, Greg Hart and wife Melissa of Canaan, Jill Watrous and husband Jason of Winslow, Brent Hart and fiancé Tammy Turner of Chelsea, Alex Greeley and wife Becky of Pittsfield and Amy Greeley and fiancé Keith Dean of Levant. Four great-grandchildren, Abigail Hart of Canaan, Gage and Taylor Greeley of Pittsfield, and Owen Watrous of Winslow. Two step great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brooklyn McLean of North Anson.
She is survived by five brothers, Kenneth Couture, Eugene Couture and wife Judy, Reggie Couture, Harvey Couture and wife Renette, and James Couture and wife Enola all of Waterville. Five sisters, Agnes Pomerleau and husband Frank of Winslow, Rita Cormier and husband Ron of Clinton, Betty Deraps of Fairfield, Genevieve Adams and husband David St. Peter of Waterville , and Norma Stankevitz and husband Frank of Winslow; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her brothers William Couture, Jr. and Bernard Couture.
Visitation will be held on Sunday November 10, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday November 11, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water Street, Skowhegan. Committal service will be at a later date.
