Skowhegan - It is with heartbreaking sadness that we announce the passing of our mother. Dorothy A. (Davis) Gilbert, 72, passed peacefully into heaven on February 8, 2019 at 9:59pm with her loving family at her side. Dot had battled many debilitating illnesses over the past 24 years. She was a stroke and two-time breast cancer survivor. She was born September 21, 1946 in Gardiner the daughter of Alice Pauline (Humphrey) and Kenneth Charles Davis. Dot graduated from Gardiner High School, class of 1965. She worked for Diamond International in Oakland for nearly 20 years before the business closed. Dot went on to work for LJL Pizza Corporation until she became disabled in 1989 after a work injury. Inspired by her stay at Maine General Hospital in 1995, Dot went back to the Rehabilitation Department from 1997 until 2009 where she logged over 3,000 hours of volunteer service.
Dot married her soul mate David Edward Gilbert on July 21, 1968. They spent the next 41 years together raising their three daughters, three grandsons and great granddaughters until David’s death on December 29, 2009. Dot was a member of TOPS #248 and the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War #17, sold Fashion two-twenty cosmetics, and made the most unforgettable peanut butter fudge and gingerbread.
Dot was predeceased by her parents; husband; siblings, Joyce, Bobby, and Richard; as well as her son-in-law, Ed Holmes.
She is survived by her daughters, Judy A. Holmes of Greenbush, Jill A. Hunt and her significant other Raymond Vincent, Jr. of Etna, Julie A. Sprague and her significant other Roland Hunt of Claremont, NH; grandsons, Justin Gilbert and wife Jamie, Skyler Hunt and girlfriend Amber Griffeth of Canaan and Anthony Hunt and girlfriend Kelly Folsom; great granddaughters, Kace and Alixandra; step great granddaughters, Jasmyne and Taylor; siblings, May, June, Caroline, and Charles; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dot’s life at 1pm, Sunday, February 17, 2019 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan with Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. A time of refreshment and remembrance will be held immediately following the services.
