John Gray Cassidy was found to have returned home to his Lord and Savior on November 16, 2017. Gray was preceded in death by his father, Jack Cassidy, and mother, Leyda Fewkes Cassidy. Gray leaves behind his brother, Quentin Michael Cassidy, aunt and uncle, Betty and Merrill Spence, godson, Anh-Kiet Ngo, numerous cousins and many close friends.
Gray was born in Seattle, Washington on January 13, 1955. He graduated from Mercer Island High School and received a Bachelors of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of Washington. Gray was an avid reader and could always be seen reading a new book.
Gray was a devout Catholic with a sincere and unwavering faith. He went to confession weekly and felt blessed that he lived only one mile from his parish, St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Snohomish, Washington, and worked only two blocks from St. James Cathedral in Seattle. As a Security Officer for Swedish Medical Center, Gray cared deeply for patients and staff, whom he loyally served for 34 years until his passing.
Gray was passionate about marital arts and military strategy; his passion was contagious. He began studying martial arts in 1971 and fell in love with Choy Li Fut Kung-Fu. Gray continually advanced and became a senior instructor in many styles of martial arts. He was widely respected by his many students and colleagues over the years.
Gray will be dearly missed. The vigil service for Gray will be held at 1:00 pm at the Market Cafe at Swedish Medical Center. The funeral mass will be held at noon on December 15th at Blessed Sacrament Church in Seattle. Father John Marie Bingham will be officiating. The rite of committal will follow the funeral mass at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery in Shoreline at 2:00 pm. Father Joseph “Jay” DeFolco will be officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bauer Funeral Chapel in Snohomish.
Donations are appreciated and can be made to help with funeral costs at https://www.gofundme.com/support-grays-funeral. Any funds received in excess of funeral costs will be donated to Holyrood Catholic Cemetery for their generous donation of a burial plot and burial services to Gray.
