Her journey began on October 8, 1932 in Lake Stevens. She was born at home on the “ranch”. She was the 5th child of 9 children. The family moved to Machias where Millie started 1st grade. They moved again to 301 Ave B in Snohomish when she was in 6th grade. She finished her 6th grade year at Emerson Elementary, and moved up to Snohomish Jr High and then Snohomish High School, graduating in 1950. She was active in sports and excelled at tennis. She was the Snohomish County tennis singles champion. She had many friends and worked at the Brown’s Theatre as a cashier.
Millie loved to dance and met Glenn in 1949 at a dance at Normana Hall in Everett. They were married in 1954 and celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to Glenn’s death. Their first house was in Everett and Millie loved having everything of her own and getting to decorate the way she wanted. She had shared a house with lots of family members prior to being married. Living in Everett did not last long and they were soon back in Snohomish at 914 Root St.
Millie worked secretarial jobs for Ted Westrom in Everett, Western Skagit Timber in Seattle, Everett Auto and Weyerhauser in Everett. She had several stories of being a young woman working in a “man’s world” in the 1950’s. She volunteered as a Camp Fire leader. Her first group of girls have remained connected all these years and Millie loved those girls.
Millie became a mother in 1962 with the birth of Miriam, followed closely by Jack’s birth in 1963. Her world changed and her dreams of having a family were imagined. All focus changed to raising her children. She loved her family and took great pride in Miriam and Jack’s accomplishments.
Millie provided hours of service to St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She was the church secretary for Fr. Patrick O’Neill. She helped start the first Thanksgiving Dinner. She organized 14 years of wedding receptions held in the “new” hall. The community of friends that were made during those years became lifelong friends and were with her to the end.
In the 80’s and 90’s Millie worked for Catholic Community Services. Miriam and Jack graduated from college. Jack married Anne and her three grandsons were born - Patrick, Tim and Sean. She loved all the family times and so enjoyed her time spent with the “boys” and watching them grow into fine young men.
By the 2000’s it was time for retirement. Millie and Glenn traveled across the country and also to Ireland. They lived for short stints in Oregon and Montana while Glenn worked some post retirement jobs. They created a home away from home at the Glen at Maple Falls and enjoyed their time in nature at their trailer. They moved to Glenwood in Marysville in 2004 and Millie spent her last 20 years in their home.
We celebrate her memory and many examples she gave us of celebrating life.
