Nicholas Rocco Joseph Martone, of Geddes, was called home by our Lord on Monday, May 14, as he was mowing his lawn; he was 85 years old. Nicholas proudly served his county in the U.S. Army Air Forces and was a quality control engineer at General Electric for 37 years; he applied that engineering mindset to the distribution of the thousand Christmas cookies he made each December (he devised algorithms based on numerous factors to determine the number and variety of cookie each recipient would receive). Nicholas enjoyed organizing projects and renovations of his mother's estate, and the simple pleasures of a good cup of coffee, gardening, baking bread and cooking--his specialties were chicken soup, pasta, sauce & meatballs. The highlight of week was Saturday Lunch on Essex Street with his siblings in the house in which they grew up. Nicholas cherished his dogs Kona & Latte, both Yorkshire Terriers. He ended each conversation with "Have a pleasant day!"
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Maryanne & Bobby Morrow of San Francisco, CA; his wife of 41 years, Lucille C. Martone, passed away in 1991. Nicholas came from a large & extremely close family and is survived by his older brother, Joseph, and younger sisters: Theresa Cavallaro, Virginia [Peter] Convertino, Eleanor DeCarlo & Lillian Martone. Pre-deceasing Nicholas were his sisters Frances Sackeli & Rosemary Kane.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 am Saturday at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME and 9 am at St. Cecilia's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours are 4 to 7 pm Friday at the funeral home, 2601 Milton Ave.
