Born in Akron, OH, she was the daughter of the late Alton and Marie S. (Reider) McPherran. Her parents instilled a love of God in Martha and at a young age she gained an appreciation of singing and playing hymns. Over the years, Martha would join the choir, women’s group, and teach Sunday School at the congregations she attended.
Martha graduated from Central High School and attended Kent State College. She devoted her life to taking care of her family. She always looked forward to her sisters and their families visiting- sometimes unexpectedly! As her nieces recall, “We always wanted Aunt Martha to brush our hair; she was sweet and gentle.”
A social butterfly, Martha loved spending time with friends. Once her husband was a retiree, Martha and Ron became “snowbirds” and would look forward to seeing friends in Florida. There she took painting classes, played cards, and performed in concerts playing organ. She was an avid golfer and could be found on the course up to three times a week, depending upon the weather.
Martha was a world traveler and made fond memories traveling with family over the years. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting; many of her loved ones have a “Made By Martha” original in their homes. She was a former member of the Somerset Garden Club and together, the Hagermans would bake delicious pies with fruit from their garden.
As members of the Somerset Yacht Club, Martha and Ron spent a lot of time on the water. When they couldn’t be on the water, they would grab a bite to eat and sit by the boat ramp, sometimes chatting with other members, and sometimes sitting in silence and enjoying the serenity the waves gave them.
Her spirit lives on in her four children, Priscilla E. Hagerman and her husband Gerald of Tequesta, FL, Ronald S. Hagerman, III of N. Dartmouth, Richard B. Hagerman and his wife Patricia of Marshfield Hills, and David T. Hagerman and his wife Donna of Humarock; two grandchildren, Katia Greene and her husband Matthew of Bridgewater, and Kristina Hagerman of Scituate; four great-grandchildren, Eli, Olivia, Elsie, and Mabel; one sister, Gloria J. Hartley of Huntington Beach, CA as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to being predeceased by her husband Ron, Martha was the mother of Kathleen Susan Hagerman, who was lost in infancy, the grandmother of the late Peter and Michael Hagerman; sister of the late Jennie M. Bryson, and mother-in-law of the late Annelle (DeLorme) Hagerman.
