Robert M. Ponte

Born in Fall River, a son of the late Manuel and Mary G. (Almeida) Ponte, he moved to Somerset in 1961.

A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, class 1950, he received both his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Bridgewater State College in 1955, and his Master’s degree in education 1958 and received his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Boston University in 1965

A school teacher, he taught at Dighton High School, Morton Jr. High School, was the Reading Coordinator for the City of Fall River, and also taught Reading and English at B.M.C. Durfee High School before retiring in 1993.

An avid collector of many things, he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing the guitar. He loved all animals, especially cats.

He is survived by two daughters: Jennifer Medeiros of Dighton, Elizabeth Ferreira and her husband Richard of Fall River; three grandchildren: Bianca Nowell, Jacob and John Medeiros; two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Robert C. Ponte and brother of the late James and Frank Ponte, Dolores Crofton, and Edward Ponte Sr.

His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 11:00AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County St., Somerset. Visiting hours prior to his service from 10:00 to 11:00AM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Faxon Animal Rescue League, 474 Durfee St, Fall River, MA 02720.
