

Edna (Souza) Soares, 65, of Dartmouth, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at home surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer that she fought strong and hard till the end. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry M. Soares, Sr.
Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Manuel and Oleda (Cadema) Souza, she was raised in New Bedford and had resided in Dartmouth for 34 years.
Mrs. Soares was a graduate of New Bedford High School and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth.
She worked as a switchboard operator at St. Anne’s Hospital for many years until her retirement. Previously, she worked as a bank teller and most recently was a bus monitor for Whaling City Transit.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Edna cherished every moment spent with her children and grandchildren whom she loved and adored.
Survivors include her children, Henry M. Soares and his wife Dawn, Michelle Ribeiro and her husband Barry Jr. and Deborah Smith and her husband Ambrose all of Dartmouth; a sister, Stella Pires and her husband George of Dartmouth; a sister-in-law, Joanne Neto and her husband John of Dartmouth; grandchildren, Henry Antonio Soares, Max Michael Soares, Allysa Paige Ribeiro, Jacob Henry Ribeiro and Landon Brady Smith; several godchildren including, Tabitha (Martins) Lopes, Kirby Neto and Lori Pires; and several nieces and nephews. She was sister of the late Richard Souza and his late wife Lucy and Ubert Souza and grandmother of the late Logan Henry Smith.
Her Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 9am in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Visiting hours Friday 5-8pm in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford.
