A beloved husband, father, and grandfather and devout Catholic, Mr. Araujo was also a proud Azorean. He was born on March 15, 1932 on the island of São Miguel, Portugal, and was the third of three children born to Mariano T. and Deolinda T. (De Sousa) Araujo. For most of his life, Mr. Araujo lived in the small town of Ribeira Chã, where he developed his adoration of the outdoors, learned the value of hard work, and met the love of his life, Maria dos Anjos Mendonca. Over the years, he spent many happy hours tending to the grapes in his breathtaking seaside vineyards and the fruit and vegetables in his bountiful gardens. Mr. Araujo immigrated with his family to the United States, and throughout the years, split his time between his homes in the U.S. and Portugal, developing a deep affection for both countries.
The most important things to Mr. Araujo were his faith and his family. Mr. Araujo’s faith was the foundation of his virtuous and generous personality. When he was in good health, he would attend Catholic Mass every morning. His love of Jesus Christ was a constant source of joy and comfort for him and is a gift that he passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Araujo’s love for his family was strong and boundless. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maria dos Anjos; his children: Walter M. Araujo and his wife Marina D. of Freetown, MA, Nancy M. Perlman and her husband C. Max of Canton, MA, and Rui M. Araujo and his wife Claudia Z. of Berkeley, MA; four grandchildren, Brianna, Bradley, Brooke and Dylan; his brother Manuel Araujo of Ribeira Chã, and his sister Maria de Gloria Pacheco of New Bedford, MA.
