

Born in Suffern, New York, son of the late James and Della (Ackerson) Conlon, he had resided in Dartmouth for 65 years.
Mr. Conlon was a 1947 graduate of New Bedford Textile Institute, now UMass Dartmouth.
He was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served in the 4th Infantry Division of the 8th Infantry Regiment during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served in the Rhineland Central European campaign. He was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Conlon was a longtime employee at the New Bedford Standard Times, retiring in 1989, and the owner of Jack Conlon TV Service.
John was a talented handyman who excelled in construction, plumbing and electrical projects, and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. He also served as the baseball commissioner of the Dartmouth Youth Activities Association and coached all of his sons in baseball and basketball. He was actively involved with the local Cub Scout pack. He enjoyed following the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. He was a model train enthusiast and enjoyed traveling the east coast, especially Cape Cod and the White Mountains of New Hampshire with Barbara, his wife of 68 years. He was an outstanding role model and, most of all, a kind and loving person who was devoted to his wife and children.
His family includes his children, Kathy Grandmaison and fiancé Martin Thoren of Dartmouth, Susan Socha and husband Daniel of Dartmouth, Kerry Forsing and husband Eric of NH, Peter Conlon and companion Ann Vandemoer of Fairhaven, and David Conlon of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Ann DeSando and husband Joseph of NY; a brother, Francis Conlon; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late James Conlon.
His services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Dartmouth Youth Activities Association (DYAA), 225 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748.
