Kathleen L. Smith

Kathleen L. (Galligan) Smith, 63, of Dartmouth, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at home following a long illness. She was the wife of Robert D. Smith with whom she shared 41 years of marriage.

Born and raised in New Bedford, a daughter of the late James A. and Dorothy (Donnelly) Galligan, she had resided in Dartmouth for most of her life.

Kathy was a graduate of New Bedford High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and Master of Science Nurse Practitioner degree from U-Mass Dartmouth. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau.

Her successful nursing career began in 1974 as a Staff Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital. After receiving her Master’s degree in 1996, she worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Room until recently. She also taught at Salve Regina and New Bedford Vocational High School.

Kathy loved her animals and cherished the time spent with her loving family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons, Brian G. Smith and wife Danielle of NH, James P. Smith and wife Leah of NH, Brendan R. Smith and fiancé Newy of Dartmouth and Patrick M. Smith and girlfriend Emma of NH; a brother, Peter Galligan and wife Sandra of FL; a sister, Pamela Mendoza and husband James of FL; four grandchildren, Madison, Brayden, Emma and Meigha; a special friend, Jessica Lawson; and many nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 11:30 AM in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Bedford.
