Nick was the devoted husband of Robb DeSimone. Together for 35 years and married since 2013, their partnership was built on love, compassion, and a shared dedication to animals and their community.
Born in Rapid City, Nick was the son of Carol Dagenais of South Dartmouth and the late Francis Dagenais. He spent his early years in Tennessee, where he graduated from high school before earning his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. Following graduation, he returned to his family’s roots on the South Coast, where he made his home and devoted his life to veterinary medicine.
Dr. Nick’s passion for animal care was at the center of everything he did. For more than 30 years, he served as Medical Director and Chief Surgeon at NE Animal Hospital, caring for thousands of animals and the families who loved them. In 2024, he and Robb fulfilled a longtime dream by opening Dagenais Veterinary Clinic in Dartmouth. The clinic quickly flourished, growing so rapidly they soon expanded their team to meet the needs of the community. Nick always placed animals first, not only providing exceptional medical care, but also helping countless pets find loving homes. Together, Nick and Robb rescued many dogs and cats over the years.
Nick’s team of professionals will carry on his legacy of providing the very best care.
Outside of his profession, Nick found joy in travel, especially celebrating New Year’s in Key West and spending time in Provincetown. He also loved gardening, and his home in South Dartmouth was known for its beautiful and welcoming landscape. Following his busy days, he spent time socializing with his many friends.
In addition to his husband and mother, Nick is survived by his sister, Carrie Virusso of Medford; his nieces, Violet and Francesca Virusso; his brother, Nathan Dagenais of New Bedford; his lifelong friend Jenni Wylie; his beloved dogs, Esmerelda, Belle Noir, CB, and Truly; and his professional family at Dagenais Veterinary Clinic.
Dr. Nick will be remembered for his compassion, generosity, devotion to animals, and the profound impact he made on the lives of both pets and people throughout his community.
His services will be private. Contributions may be sent to Compassionate Care ALS, www.ccals.org or to the Fairhaven Animal Shelter, 200 Bridge St., Fairhaven, MA 02719 .
