Gail Marie (Motte) Smithson, 76, of Brewster, former owner of Basset Wild Animal Farm, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the wife of Donald G. Smithson with whom she shared 59 years of marriage.
Gail was the daughter of the late Richard L. Motte and Juliette L. (Gagne) Motte.
She is survived by her husband Donald and her granddaughter, Kayleigh Marie Smithson; her sisters, Bernadette Ann Robinson of Ruskin, FL, Janet Darmofal and her husband David of Fairhaven; her brothers, Richard Motte and his wife Kathleen of Ruskin, FL, Jody Motte and his wife Laurie of Marstons Mills; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Denise Marie, and her son, Dana George.
Gail and Donald purchased Bassett Wild Animal Farm, added the Appaloosa horse plus other horses to the mix and continued the tradition of having it be a staple of summer family outings and school field trips. She loved the farm and the animals and took great pride in everything it represented. Gail was an avid supporter of the Brewster Branch of the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
Gail and Donald enjoyed spending their time in Florida during the winter months reconnecting with the many friends they made. She would put all her energy into everything she did whether it was as the owner of Bassett Wild Animal Farm, a project she was starting, baking breads, cookies, and chocolate crackers to share with everyone, or helping a friend. Gail would always be there.
Gail will be greatly missed.
Visiting hours will be held at the Doane, Beal, & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Rt. 134, South Dennis, on Sunday, March 17, 2024 from 2-5 PM. Burial will take place at a later date that will be announced.
