March 10, 1934 – July 28, 2017
Hayes, Marian C. “Susie” (Gunning) of Dennis, formerly of Somerville and of Medford, passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2017. Beloved wife of 62 years of John M. (Jack) Hayes. Adored mother of Ellen M. (Hayes) Zanino and husband James A. (Jim) Zanino of Sterling MA, and devoted grandmother of Katherine C. and James M. Zanino. Sister of James C. Gunning of Dennis MA; the late Richard Gunning, and the late Elizabeth Gunning; aunt and great-aunt to many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Marian “Susie” was born to James and Marion (Corey) Gunning in Somerville MA, the fourth of four children. She graduated from Somerville High School in 1951 and received her RN from the Somerville Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. Marian married John M. (Jack) Hayes of Cambridge MA in 1955. They owned a home in Somerville, and later in Medford MA, where they lived until their retirement to Dennis on Cape Cod in 1994.
Marian worked as an RN at Somerville Hospital, at New England Rehabilitation in Woburn, and at Mount Auburn Hospital, from where she retired as a utilization review nurse. She enjoyed deep lifelong friendships with other nurses from Somerville Hospital, and loved spending time with them socially, on vacation, at reunions, and on the phone.
Marian’s skill and compassion as a nurse was extended also to her family; throughout her life she provided care to her older sister Elizabeth “Betty,” to her mother and father as they grew older, and to her husband Jack, daughter Ellen, and grandchildren Katherine and James as needed.
Marian’s top priority during her lifetime was always her family. She was a wonderful wife of 62 years, and a caring and devoted mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends of the family.
Marian was known for her love of fun. She enjoyed hosting and attending many multi-generation family parties over the course of over 30 summers on Cape Cod. She also enjoyed travel to Ireland to visit family and friends. With her kind smile, she made the best of every situation and looked for the good in every person.
