She was born July 30, 1932, in Laconia, New Hampshire, the daughter of Raymond and Marian Mitchell, growing up on her family’s farm in Bristol. Following her graduation from Keene State College, she moved to Acton, Massachusetts where she raised her own family and embarked on a career in education, both as the founder of the Acton Country Day School and as a long-time teacher in the Stowe public schools.
She and her husband, Acton Police Chief Bucky Fenton, moved to East Dennis upon his retirement in 1983. Consistent with her incredible work ethic, Rae returned to school and ultimately the work force as a case manager with Cape Cod Elder Services, a second career that entailed her traveling the Cape attending to the needs of seniors right up until her second retirement as she neared the age of eighty.
Following a fall in her home and lengthy rehabilitation, she moved into Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth where she resided for the remainder of her years.
She was predeceased by the love of her life, husband Bucky in 2018, and sisters Arthea Sillari and Margaret (Peggy) Wallace.
She will be missed by 12 children, Linda Allen of Fernandina Beach, FL; James Fenton of Acton, MA; Dennis Fenton (Nancy) of La Mesa, CA; David Fenton (Carol) of Panama City Beach, FL; Steve Janson (Kim) of Williston, VT; Kathy Schad (Steve) of Harvard, MA; Judy Fenton of Maynard, MA; Rick Janson (Julie) of Peterborough, NH; Paul Janson (Nancy) of Brewster, MA; Dee Leeber (Jim) of Acton, MA; Donna Cisek of Plymouth, MA; Barbara McSweeney of West Boylston, MA; as well as her 32 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Rae’s life will be held later this spring.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the entire staff of Thirwood Place for the care and comfort they provided Rae during the last years of her life.
