After a long fight with Alzheimer’s, Susan Carolan Neal passed away on December 27, 2022. Susan was born on June 1, 1944 in Boston, MA. She was a WWII baby, and her father learned of her existence through the announcement in the military publication Stars and Stripes. Susan grew up in Newton, MA and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newton Centre. She earned an Associate of Science degree from Newton Junior College, attended Boston University, and became a registered nurse in 1968.
Susan met Alfred Neal in Ethiopia while she was a Peace Corps volunteer, and he was a diplomat at the American Embassy in the capital city of Addis Ababa. They were married first in a legal ceremony on December 24, 1969 and then again on January 10, 1970 in a Catholic ceremony. During the next 20 years, they had four biological children and adopted four children from Korea, Japan, Chile, and Mexico. Until 1996, when Alfred retired from the Foreign Service, Susan and Alfred moved to a new country every two to three years. Her take-charge attitude and strategic planning enabled these moves to be seamless. Her ability to overcome challenges in new countries was just one of her many strengths.
Susan was a force to be reckoned with, but, at her core, was the love that she had for her friends and family. She would do anything to help another person. Her kindness and compassion are reflected in her children and grandchildren. She will forever be remembered as the heart of the Neal family.
Susan is survived by her husband Alfred H. Neal; her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Thomas Mannion, and their children, Katie and Tara; her daughter Erika Neal; her son and daughter-in-law, Justin and Sarah Neal, and their children, Maya and Jack; her daughter Jennifer Neal; her son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Marina Neal, and their children, Sofia and Martin; daughter Jessica Neal and her son Jeffrey; and son, James Neal and his daughter Marianna. Her laughter, story-telling, humor, and friendship will be missed by many.
