Bill was born and raised in Corning, NY, the son of the late William James and Agnes Rose (McGovern) McElhaney. He was a graduate of Northside High School (’53) and Clarkson University (’57), where he met his future wife Helen Ann and married in 1958. Bill and Helen Ann raised their family in Harvard, MA.
Bill held regional sales management roles with the global industrial manufacturer Ingersoll Rand for over 40 years. He worked out of their Chicago, Boston, Charlotte and Los Angeles offices until his retirement in 1999. In 2001, Bill and Helen Ann moved to Dennis, MA. Bill enjoyed gardening, bowling, golfing, fishing, hosting new and lifelong friends and traveling to Italy, Ireland, Alaska and South America. Bill also donated his time and talents to various organizations. He was Past President of the Cape Cod Men’s Club, member of the Retired Men’s Club of Cape Cod, the Dennis Capital Outlay Committee as well as a board member of Supporters of the Dennis Council on Aging (DCOA). He was an active parishioner at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster.
In addition to his wife Helen Ann, Bill is survived by his children Margaret “Meg” (Kevin) Hartwell of Ashland, MA; Michael Patrick (Susan) McElhaney of Natick, MA; and William James (Chris, deceased) McElhaney III of Falmouth, MA; his sisters Jane Walsh of East Greenwich, RI, Anne Stanton of Euless, TX; Agnes Way of Port Townsend, WA; the late Mary McElhaney of Pocasset, MA; and his grandchildren; Jaimie Hartwell, Nolan McElhaney, Kyle McElhaney and Shane McElhaney.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames, 729 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660. A Funeral Mass will take place 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19th at Our Lady of the Cape, 468 Stony Brook Rd, Brewster, MA 02631. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.
