

Mr. Maugans was born in Rockingham County, N.C. on May 6, 1942 and was the son of the late John Thomas Maugans and Ora Burton Maugans. He earned his Engineering Degree from N.C.State University.He was an Engineer in the Textile Industry for many years where he had worked for Hoechst Fibers of Spartanburg, S.C, Fiber Industries of Salisbury, N.C, Albany International of Albany, N.Y. and Amoco Fabrics and Fibers of of Austell, Ga. He loved to play Golf and enjoyed boating. He was an avid collector of antiques, depression glass, and coins. Mr. Maugans also enjoyed doing genealogy. He loved classical music and watching his favorite Television Sitcom The Bing Bang Theory. He was a Duncan Yo-Yo winner in 1955. He was a member and past president of the Brunswick County Fishing Club. He was a Baptist ordained deacon and served at First Baptist Of Spartanburg, S.C. Mr. Maugans was a survivor of polio prior to the vaccine being discovered and was chosen to be a March Of Dimes Poster Child for Greensboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by a daughter, DeAnna Ruth Baldwin.
He is survived by his wife, Ella Ruth Maugans of the home; a son, Burton Thomas Maugans II and wife Kelly of Acworth, Ga.; grandchildren, Pierce Thomas Maugans and wife Brianna, Taylor Mischelle Baldwin, Michael Thomas Baldwin and Jonathan Christopher Baldwin; son in-law, Christopher John Baldwin of Austell, Ga.; a sister, Joy Maugans of Asheville, N.C.
A memorial service will be held Saturday September 27, 2025 at two o’clock in the afternoon at Peacock Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service Chapel, 1411 N. Howe Street, Southport, N.C.
