He was born on November 10, 1941, to the late Charles Eugene Besancon Sr. and Lois Risser Besancon in Dallas, Texas.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Jeff Besancon and Harold Besancon.
Those left to cherish his family are his wife, Susan Compton Besancon; son, Charles Eugene Besancon III (Sarah) of Peoria, Arizona; daughter, Rebecca Aline Lowe (Jason) of Ashburn, Virgina; stepdaughters, Kathy Compton (Fredrik) Loddekopinge, Sweden, and Jennifer Compton Binsley (Jeff) of Mechanicsville, Virgina; sister, Ann Moore of Magnolia, Delaware; and grandchildren: Anna Besancon, Charles Besancon, and Aiden Binsley.
Growing up in a military family, Charlie spent time both in England and Germany, planting the seed for a life-long love for travel. He studied mechanical engineering and graduated from the University of South Carolina Columbia. Charlie was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his honorable discharge, he went to work for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virgina. He then went on to work at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, and it was there where he met his first wife, Mayada. Together they had two children. Besides being a devoted family man, Charlie indulged in his love for cars and auto racing. For the majority of his career, he worked at the National Ground Intelligence Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. During his time there, he was proud and well suited to be a part of two groundbreaking peace treaties (the INF and START) between the USA and the then USSR.
Charlie and his second wife Sue married in 2002. They started their life together in the mountains of Virginia and upon retirement moved to the laid-back coastal life of Southport, North Carolina. Together they journeyed both near and far, spending time with family and friends, or exploring new places —be it by car, RV, or plane. Insatiably curious, Charlie had the gift of the gab and sparked lively conversation with the many folks he met along the way. When at home, Charlie volunteered at Dosher Memorial Hospital where he crafted the art of filing and use of the Xerox machine - his talents of assisting surgeons were always overlooked. But more often than not, you could find his nose in a book (he loved history and biographies) or listening to music – shout out to Jimmy Buffet! In fact, maybe Charlie and Jimmy are having a cheeseburger together right now!
Services celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 pm, on Friday, May 10, 2024 in the Peacock - Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, suggested donations might be made to the Wounded Warrior Relief Organization, American Cancer Society, or your local animal shelter.
