Born on January 31, 1939, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, David lived a life marked by curiosity, creativity, and deep commitment to his family and community.
David graduated from Escanaba High School in Escanaba, Michigan in 1957. He went on to pursue higher education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette and later attended the Winona School of Photography. His academic journey also included studies at the University of Michigan School of Banking in Ann Arbor—an early indication of his diverse interests and talents.
From 1974 to 1993, David owned and operated Longboat Camera Shop and Photography Studio on Longboat Key, Florida. His passion for photography was not only a profession but a lifelong pursuit that brought him joy and fulfillment. After closing his studio, he transitioned into national sales roles from 1993 to 2014 with companies including Jones Signs in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Healthy & Natural Journal; and Homefinder Magazine in Florida. In each role, David brought dedication and professionalism that earned him respect among colleagues and clients alike.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, David was a man of many passions. He loved sailing on his sailboat Piccadilly and exploring Europe, often combining his travels with his love for photography. A devoted opera enthusiast, he found inspiration in music’s ability to tell stories across time and culture.
David was deeply involved with St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. His faith played a central role throughout his life. He led men’s Bible study groups with thoughtfulness and sincerity, fostering meaningful connections within his church community.
One of David’s proudest personal achievements came earlier this year when he completed an extensive genealogy project tracing his mother’s lineage back to the Mayflower. This labor of love spanned many years and generations—14 in total—and reflected both his meticulous nature and enduring curiosity about history and heritage. He generously shared this passion by helping others explore their own family histories.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Pettus; daughter, Jana Lavelle and her husband Dan; grandsons, Josh Lavelle and Gabe Lavelle with wife Lauryn; great-granddaughter Lily Lavelle; stepson, Alistair with wife Anna and their daughter Dalriada; niece, Gayle Cherry with husband Rodney and their children and grandchildren; as well as Bill Nolt, and Todd Nolt with wife Angeline and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Grace Gruber; and his sister, Martha Measel.
A memorial service celebrating David’s life will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport on September 27, at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 205 E. Moore Street in Southport.
David will be remembered for the richness of his pursuits, the depth of his faith, and the legacy he leaves through both family ties and friendships formed over a lifetime. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
