Don Jones

Don was born on August 22, 1956, in Cayce, South Carolina, to the late Donald W. Jones and Shirley Bodie Sasser. He was also lovingly raised by his stepfather, Harold Sasser, who preceded him in death as did his aunt (more like a sister) Betty B. Knotts.

After graduating from high school, Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, spending his service years in Scotland. When he returned home, his curious mind and love for technology led him to study electronics, eventually building a successful career in broadcast engineering. He was a man who built things — with his hands, his mind, and his heart.

Don lived life with a spirit of adventure and wonder. From a young age, he was drawn to the skies — he began flying lessons before he was even old enough to drive. Through perseverance, he earned his instrument rating and soared through the clouds as a general aviation pilot. Later, he discovered the freedom and beauty of sailing, calling it “like flying, but on the water.” It became another passion that brought him joy and deep friendships. As a founding member of the Southport Yacht Club, Don found a community he treasured.

He was the kind of person who showed up when it mattered. He believed in the power of friendship, in helping others, and in the quiet satisfaction of hard work. If something needed fixing or someone needed a hand, Don was there — no fanfare, just kindness and a willingness to give.

Don leaves behind his devoted wife of 30 years, Freda Jones, and his sister-in-law, Tammie Pritchard. His South Carolina family includes his uncle John M. Knotts, Jr. and cousins Robert and Nikki Rodgers, Kristopher and Tara Arnett, Jeff and Dusty Busher, and John (Bozie) Bodie, Jr. He also leaves behind countless friends whose lives were made better by knowing him. His presence, his laughter, and his generous heart will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at his home at a later date, where memories will be shared and his remarkable life honored.
