

Mr. Garner was born in Wilmington , NC on November 27, 1942 and was the son of the late Eddie Vick Garner Sr. and Vertle Barbour Garner. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was a dedicated public servant. Early in his career he was a firefighter with the Carolina Beach Fire Department and also served with the New Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad. He worked with the Wilmington Fire Department from 1974 until 1993 where he served as a firefighter, EMT Intermediate and was an Engineer at the time of his retirement. Following his retirement he moved to Brunswick County. He was instructor, teaching several Fire, Rescue and Haz-Mat Classes. He was a member of the Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department where he served as Assistant Chief and Safety Officer. He was a member of the NC Rescue and EMS Association; NC Sheriff’s Association: International Association of Arson Investigators; NC Governmental Retired Employees, the American Legion and the Natural Conservatory Committee.
He is survived by his son, Scott Garner of Leland; a daughter, Tiffany Lyon and husband Tim of El Paso, Texas; Granddaughter, Brynn Garner and her mother Andrea.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday August 5, 2017 at eleven o’clock in the morning at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel with reverend Rick Russell and Reverend Charles Drew officiating. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 pm at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington.
Pallbearers will be members of Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the former New Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad and retired and active members of the Wilmington Fire Department.
Friends are invited to a time of visitation with the family on Saturday morning one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Ocean View United Methodist Church, Oak Island or a volunteer fire department of one’s choice.
