
Mrs. Peterson was born December 1, 1939 in Texas to the late Guillermo and Clemencia Ramirez. She was dearly loved by all of her family and friends. Vangie graduated from the Baptist School of Nursing in San Antonio and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She spent most of her career as a registered nurse in pediatric hospitals. She worked at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, both in Memphis, TN, and the Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children in Atlanta. Locally she was a nurse for Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Later Vangie became a nursing instructor for various nursing schools. She was a member of the Oak Island Senior Center, where she enjoyed making and teaching basketry. Vangie volunteered with the New Hope Clinic and the Southport / Oak Island Interchurch fellowship.
Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Gary Peterson; a son Harry Anthony Joye, III of Oak Island; a daughter Eileen Sexton and husband Wallace of Charleston, SC; three step-sons Robert Eric Peterson and wife Lynn of Ocean Isle Beach, David Peterson of Bozeman, MT, and Del Peterson and wife Julie of Atlanta, GA; three sisters, Esther Spence, Edna Baron, and Estelle Lopez all of Texas; and one grandchild, Conley Joye. Vangie was preceded in death by a sister Alice Lawson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church of Oak Island where she was a member.
