Johnnie was born December 5, 1951, in Mullins, South Carolina, to the late John Quincy Holmes and Josephine Turbeville Holmes. He was a proud veteran of the US Air Force, where he enlisted shortly after graduating high school, serving from 1971 to 1975. Johnnie was a plant supervisor for Glen Raven Mills for several years until he became disabled and relocated to Long Beach (Oak Island), North Carolina.
Johnnie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to so many. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes and the American Legion Post 543. He held a strong faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who loved his church and all his brothers and sisters in Christ that he had met over the years.
Johnnie enjoyed the outdoors and especially time spent with his family. Every opportunity he had to take his daughters and grandchildren fishing were a cherished treasure to him. Oh the stories that old boat could tell! He lived life to the fullest and never took a moment for granted. Never had he met a stranger he could not strike up a conversation with.
With his contagious smile and humor, he will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Herman Brinson, and great-nephew, Alex Brinson. Survivors include his wife, Teresa Holmes; two children, Tanya Yow and husband Chris, and Gia Cook and husband Devan; a step-daughter, Amber Johnson; four grandchildren, Justin Thomas and wife Grace, Quincy Holmes, Keely Andrews, and Rylan Cook; a great-granddaughter, Kaliyah Randolph; a sister, Mary Brinson; a nephew, Gary Brinson and wife Rhonda; a first cousin that he loved like a brother, Richard Turbeville and wife Jeanette (Bunny); a great-niece, a great-great nephew, and several cousins.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Devita Dialysis Center in Southport who took excellent care of Johnnie for the last five-plus years.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Boiling Spring Lakes. The family will have visitation 2:00PM at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at Cape Fear Memorial Park.
