Langhorne was born on July 17th, 1950, in Washington D.C., to James Langhorne Wiley and Kathryn “Kitty” Barrett Wiley of Middleburg, Virginia.
She attended Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, MA and then studied at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. An accomplished horsewoman, she helped her father train horses on their farm in The Plains, Virginia and later served as a judge at countless horse shows. Her greatest passion was riding and being surrounded by animals.
Langhorne was a one-of-a-kind, active woman who always looked you in the eye and told you what she was thinking. She was a lifelong learner with a rare combination of humor, style, grit, and charm. A pillar of her community, she possessed passionate political beliefs and dedicated much of her time to the Beach Preservation Association of Oak Island. She and her husband owned and operated Island Resort Motel for fifteen years. They welcomed guests from all over the country, along with their pets -be they dogs, cats, bunnies, iguanas or ferrets- all were welcome! Her love of people, flower gardens, and fixing up old houses was evidenced by the way she lived her life. Always with a plan, hammer, paint brush and “can do” attitude, her indomitable spirit was infectious. One of her oldest friends reflected that the word, “no” was not in Langhorne’s vocabulary. Her spirit was like smoke that surrounded you. It drew you in. As a consequence, you became a better person for it.
She leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Harold “Jock” Canning. Langhorne is also survived by her loyal German Shepherd, Athena, son Beau Thebault (wife Lauren Thebault), stepson Drew Canning (wife Marie Canning), three grandchildren, Lily, Jasper and Ophelia Thebault, and half-brother Lewis S. Wiley.
Langhorne will be laid to rest on her family’s farm in Virginia alongside her five beloved old dogs.
