Margaret was born November 10, 1944 in a place far far away to the Nebraskan pioneering families the Halls and Mahoney's. She was the tail end of Irvin Mahoney and Marvel Hall’s five children. She is survived by her brother Jerry Mahoney of Silverdale, WA and predeceased by her sisters Carol, Jean and Kathleen. She is also predeceased by her infant daughter Dawn Marie.
Maggie grew up in Beatrice and Lincoln, Nebraska. She graduated from Pius X High School, Duchesne College and the University of Nebraska with a degree in elementary education. She did further graduate studies at Rowan University and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
While teaching at the tender age of 20 she met the love of her life Michael Samide, a midshipman at the University of Nebraska. They were married on June 4, 1967 and immediately headed off to Pensacola, Florida where Mike began his Naval Flight Training. Twenty one moves later found them finally retiring to Southport, NC in 2004. In that period Maggie always ended up teaching fourth grade. She loved her students as they did her. From Mississippi to Washington to New Jersey to Illinois to New Hampshire to Connecticut with a few extra places thrown in her energy was boundless. She even organized a parent group during their years in England because she wasn’t allowed to teach.
Maggie continued an active retirement of both social and service activities. She was a Dosher Hospital volunteer and served as its president. She served as co-chair of the first Wine Tasting Committee of Brunswick Newcomers’ Club with her husband and later co-chair of the Social Committee. She started and was a member of several book clubs, Priorities lunch group, Encore and various par 3 golf groups. She was a member of the St James Service Club and the Sacred Heart Ladies Group. She was her husband’s right hand for his church activities helping with Meals on Wheels, Tootsie Roll fundraising, Children’s Christmas Party, in the kitchen as a sous chef and Special Olympics.
Maggie and her husband travelled to 49 states (he made all 50), six of seven continents and almost every island in the Atlantic, Pacific and Caribbean in their 58 years of marriage.
She passed at home in the arms of her husband after a decade long battle with dementia.
Her husband thanks all of Maggie’s Angels who assisted him during this time including the nurses of Gentiva Hospice, Tikeya, DJ, Kelsey, Gabby, Donna, Amanda, and Dr. Pogodina. His assistants Kayla, Savannah, Mary Ann, Mary Lou, Peggy and Tommy, his friend and Eucharistic minister. He also wishes to thank his lunch groups who provided him a lunch break on Fridays.
