Norman had seven aunts, three uncles, and many cousins. He was married to Janice Swan Holden, the “love of his life” for many years. He had one son, Charles Dean Holden and two grandchildren, Brooke Morgan and Bryant Kelly Holden, whom he loved greatly. He also had two pet dogs, “Baby” and “Suzy” which were always with him.
He was a member of Southport Baptist Church, where he was baptized at the age of 11 on November 11, 1947. He served as a member of Board of Trustees, President of Baptist Men, a Deacon, and Usher. He remained a member there until his death.
Norman was a United States Veteran by serving in the Naval Reserves, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Serving his country in these three different branches greatly influenced his life. He graduated from Southport High School in 1954 and Pembroke University in 1964. He spent 33 years working as a school teacher, Director of Lower Cape Fear Detention Center and NC Adult Probation Supervisor at one time supervising officers in twelve eastern counties. Upon retirement he received “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine” presented by Governor Mike Easley. He served Governor Easley eight years as his Liaison.
He served his beloved Southport for twenty-two years as an Alderman for four years and Mayor for 18 years. He in addition to the Aldermen, City Manager, and the City Planner played an important role in obtaining Fort Johnston from the federal government. He had many other accomplishments for the city he dearly loved.
Mr. Holden always believed in the Bible passage, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
