I’m so sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. He was an amazing mentor, and a true support for me in my early days of ministry. I still vividly remember some of the advice and wise words he offered me, as well as his unconditional support and kindness. I’m holding all his family and loved ones in my prayers.

When got to Oak island in 1991, mt aunt told me about Ocean View. I loved that awesome pastor Fred who came in June of that year. The church pianist left. My aunt told Fred that her niece played the piano. That started my 10 years as pianist and choir director. Fred was the one who inspired me to go to Duke. After  five years I became a local pastor.  I miss Fred so very much. My thought and prayers to the family.

My sincere condolences to all the family.  I met Fred many years ago, when he and Beaver were dating.  There was a sincere warmth about him, and then of course  there was his wonderful sense of humor.  He will surely be missed.

Thoughts and prayers to all the family (including Pastor Fred's Church families). 1990, Pastor Fred sent us on our married way! Fred was one of the biggest reasons my mom, Louise Fine, attended and became an active member of Ocean View. Rest in Peace Pastor Fred.

Sally and I loved Pastor Fred’s enthusiasm, laugh and bear hugs.
We met Fred many years ago when we transferred our membership to Ocean View from our Methodist church in Columbus, Indiana.
Fred had a unique style of ministering to his congregation and made everyone feel special.
We lost Sally in January and feel comforted in that she will now have Fred with her in heaven to share for eternity.  There will be lots of laughter and hugs for everyone.  All will know that Fred has arrived.  Our loss, but heaven’s gain.

Pastor Fred was an answer to prayer when I got married and moved to Oak Island in 1991. 
My Mom prayed for a Spirit filled Pastor to take us under his wing and God fulfilled far greater than we had ever hoped for! Ephesians 3:20
Pastor Fred became my first spiritual mentor who covered and trained me in ministry.  When I finally made the commitment to pursue this call, I talked to Fred and he said I’ve been praying for the last 10 years for you to make this decision!
He never gave up on me. Little did he know his prayers and leadership in my life influenced my ministry above and beyond what I ever thought would be possible. 
He was my shepherd for 23 years and I will cherish those memories as long as Iive!

Fred Roberts , a man  whose  genuine kindness  ,love  and virtue touched  and made this world a better place.
-Fred drove 2.5 hrs(without hesitation) to critical care unit to baptized our  3 day old infant son In Dec.1982. The 2 years in Hatteras Village 1981-83 our families lives were entwined .
Although we have  rarely seen each other since--the  goodness of this soul always felt close.  The earth has shifted.
- His  smile and laughter with Jesus now with many blessing.

I remember meeting Pastor Fred, he was a dynamic person, I  will always remember his genuine and sincere hug.

I am sad to hear the news about Fred and wish to express my sincere condolences to Betsy and all her family.  

Fred was my supervisor for my first summer internship as a student at Duke Divinity School, back in the summer of 1993 (I think). This man was pure joy--always having a huge hug and a contagious laugh. 

There were many days when we'd all head to the beach, but one stands out the most in my mind when the surf was up and I boogie boarded the waves all day--like a roller coaster, like a kid who kept going back for more, laughing, laughing, laughing, and Fred was right there enjoying it all.

It was a good summer, and Fred was a good man and a good pastor.  He will be missed.

I knew Rev Fred during the time he was  pastor of Haw River United Church. He was very special to me. I think of him often, especially when I am trying to understand my faith more deeply. His counsel was always true.

From the first time we met him we called him the Monk.   He would laugh and smile.   We went to see them in OKI, they were happy to see us.  They showed us around, Fred was especially happy to show off the church.  They took us around and told us about the history of OKI and Southport.   We had a good time spending the day with our cousins.   We will  miss Fred and his smile, laugh and jollyness.

So many lives he touched. He was attuned to nature…saw life through Native Eyes….such a wonderful Friend.

Fred loved people and animals.  He blessed our neighborhood horses in Burgaw at the United Methodist Church.  He also came to my home to bless my sick dog before she passed.  He will be missed by so many.

So sorry to hear of Pastor Fred’s passing.  He was my pastor at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church back in the late 80’s/early 90’s.  He Christened my infant son in 1990.  He was one of the first pastors that I can remember whom I actually enjoyed his sermons with his laughter and stories.

Oh my Lord, my Sweet Lord… I love this man, this Spirit. He touched so many Souls with his Love, Laughter, Empathy, Intelligence and so much more. Words are truly not adequate. Fred will be missed by so many.  I think I will remember his laugh for the rest of my life!  He played a significant role in the most import times of my life from officiating our marriage to baptizing our children. He will be forever missed.

I am so sorry to learn of Fred’s death.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and the boys.  It was always a pleasure seeing you and Fred at events at Bethlehem UMC.  I especially remember the number of funerals he preached there for your family members.  May God’s presence comfort you in this sad time.

Pastor Fred was such a wonderful person!  He would light up any room he was in! That smile and that laugh were contagious! He was such a wonderful Pastor at Ocean View- just the BEST! My heart aches.  We will feel his absence in our worldly life . He was a joyous human that brought love and laughter to every room he entered.  Fred touched countless lives, including mine, beginning in the late 90's when I first met him.  He married my husband and I in 2004 and I have considered him a part of my heart-family in all the years since.  Speak his name often and with a happy heart and he will never be forgotten.

Pastor Fred was so encouraging and laid back.  He had a habit of saying YES before he helped you figure out how to accomplish what you wanted to do.  I loved his laughter.  He was such a blessing to so many on Oak Island.  Grounded in Scripture and listening to the Holy Spirit, he wasn't afraid to follow God's call.

Fred was a pastor to laypersons and clergy alike. During my entry into ministry, with impish smile, bear hug and encouraging words, he lifted my spirits, and enabled me to persevere. Like the shepherd king David, Fred was a man after God’s own heart! Grace and peace to Beaver and the family.

I will always remember Fred’s laugh.  He provided wonderful spiritual counseling and was a fountain of knowledge.  Ocean View was blessed to have him as a minister for 25 years.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Ocean View United Methodist Church 8400 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465.
