

Mr. Blackwell was born November 5, 1935, one of ten children born to the late George William Blackwell, Sr. and Phyllis Madeline Smith Blackwell. He served three years in the United State Marine Corps during the time of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Blackwell was a member of Beach Road Baptist Church. He was honest and hard working. Robert and his wife retired to Southport because it reminded him of his youth on the coast of Maine, without the snow.
He is survived by his daughter, Diane Blackwell; three grandchildren, Mike Weisphal, Shaun Weisphal, and Jen Weisphal; two great-granddaughters, Kat Weisphal and Stacie Weisphal; two great-great-grandsons, Liam and Elias; a daughter-in-law, Carla White; sister-in-laws, Pat Blackwell, and Virginia Blackwell; brother and sister-in-law Gordon and Linda McNeilly and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Blackwell was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis McNeilly Blackwell; a son, Dennis R. Blackwell; and nine siblings, George W. Blackwell, Jr., Barbara McLean, Marion Rollins, Sylvia Leighton, Maurice Blackwell, Sr., David Blackwell, Sr., Sharon Hollingshead, Leon Blackwell, and Dennis P. Blackwell, Sr.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, April 30, 2026 in the Peacock - Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmie Perryman officiating. The family will have visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in the Northwood Cemetery.
