Bob was born on September 9, 1943, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to a proud military family. As the son of a United States Air Force officer, he spent his early years living across the globe, including time in Germany and Panama, shaping his lifelong sense of service and duty. He remained deeply connected to his family’s East Texas (Queen City) roots.
Bob was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 62 years, Linda Bowling Wilson, whose partnership was the foundation of a life filled with love, resilience, and shared adventure.
He is survived by his children: son William Robert Wilson and his wife, Kristy; daughters Ashley Wilson and her partner, Justin Wright, and Stacey Wilson. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Wilson, whose memory remained close to his heart. Bob was a proud grandfather to Miranda Wilson (and her spouse Trevor Jackson), Joshua Wilson (and his spouse Celine), Alison Babral (and her partner Jonathan Sullivan), Iris Babral, SPC Jakob Lambert, Kimber Lambert, 1LT Josephine Learner (and her spouse 1LT Jason Learner), Evelynne Freeman (and her partner Poohpha Warakulnukroh), and Emelia Freeman. He also cherished his great-grandson, Carson Jackson.
Bob was a proud member of the Texas A&M University Class of 1965, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration. During his time at Texas A&M, he was a distinguished member of the Fish Drill Team, contributing to their victory in the Tulane Naval ROTC National Drill Competition. He later earned his Master of Science in Business from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Bob built a distinguished career as an investigator with the U.S. General Accounting Office, dedicating 30 years of service to ensuring accountability and integrity in government. He concluded his career in the Inspector General’s Office, where his diligence and principled approach left a lasting impact.
Bob and Linda raised their family in Springfield, Virginia, where they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring values. Upon retirement, they fulfilled a shared dream of settling in Southport, North Carolina at St. James Plantation, where they spent the next 26 years enjoying coastal life, forming deep friendships, and contributing to their community. Bob served proudly as a St. James Ambassador, a volunteer for the St. James Fire department -and could often be found on the tennis court and golf course, embodying his love of activity and camaraderie.
Throughout his life, Bob embraced a wide range of passions. He was an avid tennis player, runner, golfer, and scuba diver; always seeking both challenge and joy in the world around him. Above all, he was a man devoted to his family, whose presence, humor, and integrity will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in honor of his daughter, Kimberly. Contributions may be made at https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html
Bob’s legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the values he instilled, and the countless lives he touched.
