

William Hollis Phillips, 77, of Carolina Shores, NC, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2016 at the SECU Hospice House in Bolivia, NC. Bill was born on May 14, 1939 in Salisbury, MD and was preceded in death by his parents, William Boone Phillips and Charlotte Lowe Phillips, and his daughter, Michelle Phillips Vail.
Bill is survived by his wife of 23 years, Dawn Shiley Phillips; his daughter Yvette Culver (Robert); grandchildren Joseph Wilhelmi, Michelle Culver and Jarron Dunnick; brothers-in-law Kevin Shiley, Jeffrey Shiley (Melanie), and Scott Shiley (Malissa); five nephews; and his Shelties Chloe, Brianna, Jett and Maine Coon Cat Bailey.
Bill served his country in the U.S. Air Force, earned his undergraduate degree from Salisbury University, and two masters degrees from Binghamton University and Salisbury University. After several years of teaching in public education and a long career in the communications industry, he served as the Chair of the Communications Department of UNC Pembroke and after retirement, he continued to teach at UNC Wilmington where he led several educational trips abroad with students. He was a member and lay speaker at Ocean View United Methodist Church and also attended Generations Church.
Bill loved the beach, traveling with family and friends, and riding his motorcycle. He was the happiest reading in his library from his extensive collection of books and listening to music from the fifties. He took great pride in raising and showing his beloved Shetland Sheepdogs. He was a generous, charming man with a zest for life and a keen sense of adventure. He was always up for a good time, new experiences and loved being with people. He was a born entertainer, a magnet for fun and a friend for life.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Sunday, July 31, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Arboretum Clubhouse, 122 Flowering Bridge Path, Caswell Beach, NC.
