With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and friend, Billy Joe Ward—known to everyone as BJ. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and adventure.
BJ was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, to William and Lee Ward. He grew up alongside his siblings: Sharon Stewart, Anita Faye Mitchell, LaVelle Borders, Lowell Borders, the late Donna Gaffney, the late Larry Ward, and the late LaVern Borders.
He dedicated his life to his family, including his daughters, Debbie Coward and Candy Ward, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Megan Portero (Fernando), Amanda McGinty (Darin), Julia Cressler (Alexander), and Erica Lilly. His love extended to his many great-grandchildren, all of whom he held dear.
In 1962, BJ answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Marine Corps. He rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and honorably retired in 1978 at MCAS El Toro, California. After his military service, he made his home in New Bern North Carolina, where he continued his dedication to aviation as an aircraft inspector at Cherry Point FRC East until his retirement in 2007.
BJ had a passion for travel and spent countless days on the road with his best friend, Terry, seeking new adventures. He found joy in camping, fishing, and flying his Cessna, embracing the freedom of the open sky. Despite his tough exterior, BJ was a man of immense kindness and generosity—always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His unique blend of sweetness and grit made him unforgettable to all who knew him.
One of BJ’s greatest companions was his beloved dog, Rivit. Their bond was unbreakable, timeless, and we take comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
BJ lived life to the fullest, always putting his family first. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his memory will forever be a source of strength and inspiration.
Semper Fi. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Visitation for BJ will be held Thursday, February 20, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Sparta, NJ 07871. A graveside service will occur Friday, February 21st at 12:15PM at Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 75 N Church Rd, Sparta, NJ 07871.
