I remember Mr. Dolci when he taught Latin at Franklin High School. He always seemed to be a gentleman, a quiet man with dignity. I never had him as a teacher but always thought highly of him. Later, when I was a teacher in Sparta, I occasionally saw him and he was the same dignified man. Rest in peace, Mr. Dolci.


Martin lived next door to my Dad’s house on Hunter’s Lane and was always such a kind and generous neighbor. When we kids would be climbing trees or playing in the yard, he’d beckon us over to his place and wrap up a sample of his latest culinary endeavor - asking only that we would give him an honest critique after we had tried it. So many delicious international dishes and lots of tasty baked goods. He often hosted exchange students in the summer and would invite our family over for backyard barbecues to meet the students. Martin was a genuinely sweet person. My earnest condolences to his family and loved ones. 

Mr. Dolci is a SHS legend! And a neighborhood one too, especially for his yummy zeppoles every Halloween. 

I'll never forget Mr. Dolci. He was a Sparta staple. He lived by me and he always had Zepoles and a smile for everyone. He was a great person and will be missed by us all! 

Our deepest sympathy to Martin’s family . Martin was a wonderful neighbor, friend, and respected favorite Sparta HS substitute teacher to our two daughters. I enjoyed many walking encounters and discussions with him in the early mornings. He always had very interesting home-made Halloween treats. He always knew everyone in the area, and was a fount of local information about almost anything. He will be sorely missed; we were always delighted to see him enjoying the sun in his front yard. He will live on in our memories.

I still remember my first encounter with Martin Dolci, or “El Señor,” as we affectionately called him. In the fall of 1975, I had just sat down in my first ninth-grade Spanish class. Mr. Dolci rose from his desk with an energetic smile. He began walking between the aisles of students and enthusiastically started speaking Spanish while pointing to objects or people, with exclamations like, “¡silla!” “¡escritorio!”  “¡Chica!” or “¡Chico!” Instantly, he had piqued our interest while immersing us in a whole new language. I assume most of the ninth-graders had expected Spanish to be boring, but he made it exciting from Day 1.

Everyone liked El Señor. He was always cheerful, friendly, and did his best to make our learning fun. He sold me on the value and joy of Spanish from the start, and I wound up taking not just the typical two years of Spanish but three. I did so not only because my love for the language had grown but because I enjoyed Mr. Dolci as a person. More than that, he also inspired my curiosity and desire to see more of the world through his slides that he would share. He did not simply motivate us to be good students. He inspired us to be better, more well-rounded people.

    As the decades drifted on, I would occasionally communicate with him, and it was always a pleasant interchange. I also heard how he continued to be not only engaged as a teacher in schools but also in the lives of students and graduates. Along the way, I know that he became true friends with Tom Ryder, and I assume most of us know the deep debt of gratitude we owe Tom for being such a faithful friend and caregiver for El Señor. 

    We have all had many teachers, and we can probably name some or most of them, but only a few really stand out. For me, Martin Dolci truly stood out. He was a real positive influence on my life in those formative years, and I will truly miss him. He has left a tremendous legacy that will no doubt live on.

   Hasta luego, Señor Dolci. ¡Te extrañaré!

Every morning Martin and I would have a breakfast quiz. I would ask him what he had for breakfast. Afterwards, I would give him an A or B  and give him a gold star! He would say “Oh boy” with a big smile! He always had a good sense of humor!

I can remember being about 7 years old and Uncle Marty was walking me downtown (New Brunswick) to go to a toy store. He was walking SO fast that he was practically dragging me!  By the time we got there I was too tired to pick out a toy! Lol  🥰 ♥️

I offer my sincere condolences to my Dolci Cousins - especially Martin's Sister Ann / her Family and Martin's Brother Anthony / his Family - as I am sorry to learn of his passing.
