My grandma was very good at being a “traditional” grandma. She taught me to cross stitch and baked.  I have her dining room table where I grew up to many nice memories of grandmas chili, grandmas spaghetti, or grandmas special deserts. 

When I was little she had skin cancer and had a scar on her cheek which she had tattooed to look like a flower. I thought all grandmas had flowers on their faces. 

I will miss you and treasure our last meeting together before you went home.

This picture is one of our favorites! Mom and Dad loved and respected each other deeply.  Their love grew when they were retired and could spend even more time together, remodeling! They always needed a project to keep busy. 
They demonstrated what a great marriage was. 
I guess I’m missing both my Mom and Dad together, now that they are gone.

The family growing up.  I remember Saturday cartoons and Sunday “funnies” with all of us in our parents beds! Lots of joy! I remember our big yard, and Mom gave us kids a huge area to do whatever we wanted! Oftentimes it was muddy rivers with bridges and towers we built. I remember many days “trying to dig to China” because China was just on the other side of the world, and we could dig through it to the other side!

I Corinthians 13:4-7 -- Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
 
Mom -- Memories of our routine:

Mornings -- tea, catching up on the news, reading, devotionals, and seeing if the weather would cooperate with our plans.  And, just before we'd begin the day, you'd read the calendar with a gem like "You can't get much done by starting tomorrow." Then breakfast. 

Afternoons: Break for lunch. A drive, people-watching at Terrace Park, shopping, smoothie or steamer, relaxing on the patio after a rain, watching the clouds and hoping for a rainbow (Mom - "You know, God made the rainbow"), daily balance and yoga exercises.  

Evenings:  Dinner with movie-- or a classic movie, a mystery movie,  a romance, a musical, a movie, and  bed.  

Every single day: You unfailingly recognized everyone as made in "the Creator's and Redeemer's" image.  Every single person you met saw your love, giving, and true concern for others' well-being. You expressed heartful appreciation for any service  every clerk, barista, physical therapist, nurse, doctor, and waiter or waitress did. 

Gethsemane Lutheran Church: though Mom was absent, the church continued to provide invaluable spiritual as well as practical support— weekly sermons received without fail, Luther’s Book of Psalms, flowers, cards, help with hanging pictures, storing tires – as  well as a truly memorable private concert by the Children’s Choir. 

Your good humor and strength. Patience. Love for God's Word--for which you had a  constant thirst--now fully satisfied.

Your love of stories where good triumphs, a love of Truth and the true appreciation of others -- I can only strive to emulate. 


  
 Mother and Dear Friend - I miss you.

Mom loved to garden. Growing up we had a huge yard with over 30 trees, including figs, walnuts, mulberries, loquats and citrus. I remember coming home from school and seeing her pruning the fruit trees in the heat of Southern California. She loved being outside, usually barefoot. She lived with us a few years in So Cal, and would weed our little garden in 100 degree heat at 90 years of age. I’ve  inherited her love of gardening and often think of her as I’m pruning my fruit trees. I love and miss you, mom.

A couple of memories:
One - I discovered some time ago Trader Joe's Windmill Cookies - shortbread/almond cookies shaped like a windmill. I buy them occasionally, not because I love the taste, but because eating one takes me back. On at least a few birthdays when I was young, mom would walk with me to Van DeCamps restaurant, where I would order a giant cinnamon roll. Van DeCamps had a windmill logo and wonderful windmill cookies - you always enjoyed a good cookie. We walked most everywhere back then. So nice, just mom and me, eating birthday breakfast...
Two: the library. We (mom and us kids) would go to the library every two weeks - that was when the books were due back - and checkout the maximum number of books allowed. Mom would get her mystery books and for some reason I remember my brother and I scouring the stacks for books on insects. Recently I had a flashback memory brought on by a book I was gifted - The Library Book by Susan Orlean. It's a non-fiction book about the LA Library, which has a weird and interesting history. I had no memory of ever going to the LA Library. I opened the book - there was a photo of the old library. I experienced one of those flashbacks moments - you know the ones that are full of feeling and smells and you feel like you've been whooshed on a time machine? I was getting on the city bus (so big and scary) and going to the Big Library downtown. A huge treat. I remembered everything - holding on to mom so I wouldn't get lost, the enormity (to young me) of the interior, miles of books, of course the library smell, the excitement of telling dad all about it later that evening...
Anyway, I love to read.
