Jim passed away peacefully with his family at his side. He is now free of all the pain he has experienced for years following two failed back surgeries and their complications.
Jim served in the US Navy (Naval Air Division). He was deployed for a time with his squadron on the USS Coral Sea. He will receive military honors.
He was married to his wife, partner and best friend for over 57 years. They traveled to many destinations including Hawaii, Memphis, Nashville, Texas, Las Vegas, and California. After retirement they spent their winters in Palm Springs, CA where he was mistaken for Jon Voight many times.
He retired from his favorite position selling concrete for the “Original” Central Pre-Mix Concrete Co. in 2006. During his career, Jim served on the Board of Directors for the Associated Builders & Contractors. He was a member of their Beam Club and named Associate of the Year. He also served on the Board of Directors for Spokane Homebuilders Association and again was named the Associate of the Year. Jim also attended functions for the Associated General Contractors.
Jim was a longtime member of the Dukes Auto Club and they traveled with their friends to events in many areas with their street rods.
He was a quick witted personality that enjoyed watching Gonzaga basketball, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers football games. He also enjoyed NASCAR and went to the race in Las Vegas.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorena Howlett, sisters, Linda Vokral, Joyce Gamble, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his dog Muffy.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Lois; children, Todd Stewart, Jeff Stewart (Karen Febus), Jill Brady (Rocky); granddaughter Cassandra Bell (Matt Lutrick), and the light of his life great granddaughter Danica Bell-Lutrick and Bella (the dog), all of Spokane.
Services will be held at Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N. Pines Rd., Spokane Valley, WA on Oct. 13, 2017 at 1:00 pm with the graveside following. A visitation will be held Oct. 12, 2017 from 1 -5 pm at the funeral home. A reception will be held at Darcy’s Restaurant, 10512 E. Sprague, Spokane Valley, WA following the graveside service. Memorial donations in James memory may be made to Hospice of Spokane, 121 S. Arthur, Spokane, WA 99202
