"Mary Lou. Thank you for the many walks around Medical Lake. For the fishing days on Silver Lake and the many games of Yahtzee at the round O'Donnell, table looking out at the water as the sun fell. Thank you for the Mary Lou Ice Cream, the genuine smiles and gentle hugs. Thank you for your acceptance, your encouragement, and your steady friendship for all those years. Never was there a more honest, generous and accepting person. Dear Mary Lou, you have meant so much to me. I will never let you go."

The Washington State Veterans Cemetery extends our deepest sympathies to the family of Mary Lou O'Donnell for your loss.  We honor her for the service and sacrifice she made for our nation. She is a true hero.

I worked with Mary for about 25 years at Sunshine Gardens. For 18 of those years she was our Director of Nursing. I remember her 1969 Impalla real well.

Mary Lou was an amazing Aunt.  She always had kind words for all she came in contact with.  Mary Lou was generous with her time and would spend hours with my family as we visited my parent's house at Silver Lake, WA playing Yahtzee and enjoying Mary Lou brand ice-cream she brought from her home in the Spokane Valley, WA. She taught my two children to fish, like her father John Thomas did for her on Deer Lake in the thirties.  She told me she would fish with her father for hours; catching trout, then drive back to Spokane in the family Model A Ford, with the trout wrapped in newspaper to keep them fresh and a water bag hanging over the radiator to keep it cool. One year in the early nineties we took a trip to Anchorage, Alaska with Mary Lou to visit a remote hatchery at Main Bay when my children were very young.  It was a special trip as we took a train ride under a mountain from Anchorage to Seward, spent several hours on a water taxi and finally used a float plane to travel back from that very remote Alaska location.  Mary Lou was so happy and completely in her element there on that week-long trip; she just loved fishing and adventures.  As an avid derby fisher-person I still have the original 1979 Spokane Daily Chronicle newspaper clipping and photo she kept of her next to her Westport fish derby prize-winner 32 pound, 12-ounce Big King Salmon.  As a piece of trivia, Mary Lou only owned three cars in her life, a '57 Bel Air Chevy, a '69 Chevy Impala, and Subaru Impreza Sport called Sporty. I will miss my weekly chats with Mary Lou about baseball, weather, and what is happening with her in Spokane.  Mary Lou would always close our phone chats with take care of yourself.  She was a very generous person and the Spokane Union Gospel Mission and the Spokane Guild School are very deserving charities of Mary Lou huge heart and her desire to selflessly help others in need by providing her designated charities a lasting legacy.
