

SPOKANE, WASH. | Harold E. “Shorty” Handley, 82, entered into rest Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
Shorty was born June 8, 1930, in Wagner, SD, to Joseph W. and Ruby (Hall) Handley. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1951-1953. The second oldest of 10 children, he grew to know the value of hard work, and did so to provide for his wife and children. He was a man of integrity and was unconcerned with material possessions, yet his children never went without anything they truly needed.
His lifelong work was as a gasoline transport truck driver primarily in the Las Vegas area from 1970 until his retirement in 1995. His joys included listening to country music, playing the guitar and harmonica, and spending time with his family. He was a very generous, kindhearted man who always stood up for the underdog and those less fortunate. Dad was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Survivors include his children, Victoria Weed, Albert (Faith) Haupt, Maureen Allred, Shanon Handley, Reesa Handley, and Kathy Moore; his son-in-law, James Moore; his “adopted” daughter, Laura (Bernie) Lucido; his seven grandchildren, Adam (Misty) Handley, Amy Allred, Ashley (Harvey) Ellison, Alicyn Allred (Terry), Tyler Evan Moore, Britt Haupt, Melissa Haupt, and Rachel Lucido; his great- grandchildren, Hannah, Cailyn, Aaron, Ella, Ty, Aarik, Daisy, Breanna, Brittany, Conner, Nathalie, and Kaylee; as well as his siblings, Gladys Fleming, Dixie Chenevert, Coreena Handley, Dorothy Christman, Thomas (Joann) Handley, Dave( Linda)Handley , Pat (Patty) Handley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his loving wife of 50 years, Alene C. Handley in 2009; his brother, Joseph Handley in 1993; and his son- in- law, Robin Allred in 2003.
Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne, Las Vegas , NV 89129. A family gathering will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in his memory to The American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004.
