She was a long-time resident of Greenbluff, Washington, having moved there in 1952. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and participated in many facets therein. She was an avid reader and an author of several books. Joan was a member of the Poetry Scribes and filled multiple notebooks of poems and memories. She was honored to represent that club when she was chosen to read one of her poems at the Spokane Lilac Festival Luncheon in 2018. She was also a member of the Spokane Authors and Self Publishers (SASP) which inspired her to write and self-publish a novel and has many unfinished books. She has been an inspiration to some of her grandchildren with her love of writing. She kept her hands busy with crocheting hundreds of scarves and hand towels, which she always donated what her family didn’t graciously receive. She also was an avid painter. She entered some of her paintings in the Spokane County Fair and received ribbons for those oil paintings. Paintings created by her decorate many homes.

Joan and Keith raised 13 children. In addition, they helped raise many foster children over a 30-year period. They also sponsored, to the USA, several refugee families at the conclusion of the Vietnam War. Her death is preceded by her husband Keith in 2002, her parents Gordon and Betty Hastings, and by her youngest sister, Dorothy Hastings. She will be missed by her remaining siblings and their spouses: Shirley and Parley Lee of American Falls, ID and James and Bibienne Hastings of Santee, CA. Her surviving children and their spouses are: Nancy and Verne Fallstrom of Mead, WA., Ralph and Jo Ann Carter of Mead, WA., Stephan and Angela Carter of Boise, ID., Susan and Larry Birch of Spokane, WA., Celia Rose of Mead, WA., Lori and John Caudill of Burley, ID., John and Samantha Carter of Spokane, WA., Gordon and Karen Carter of Mead, WA., Lisa Carter and James Dobosz of Colbert, WA., Marie Wakan, of Spokane, WA, William and Anngela Wakan of Boise, ID, Marcia Osborn of Provo, UT, and Robert Carter of Bothell, WA. Joan was Grandma to 48 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren! She considered all the step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren as part of her family. She had such a big heart and spread her love to everyone she met.
