

John was born on July 8, 1929, in Minot, North Dakota. He graduated from University of Montana, in 1957 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. John worked as a pharmacist full-time from 1957 through 1962 and part-time through the 70’s. John joined Spokane County Sheriff’s Department in 1962 (served on the SWAT, Bomb, Dive, Narcotics, training, and jailer) and retired after 32 years of service in 1994 as Captain of the Patrol Unit. Member of the 11th Airborne September 25, 1946 through September 13, 1949. As a World War II, Veteran, John served as (Major), Reserve of the Air Force 141st CMBT SPT SQ and was honorably discharged in 1976.
On October 6, 1951, John married Norma Jean (Kinshella) and the couple had three children together.
John was deeply involved in Law Enforcement for most of his life after joining the Sheriff’s Department. He was a founding member of Washington State Law Enforcement Association, Past President May '78-May '79, Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, 1976, Member of 11th Airborne, National Quartermaster, American Legion, Armed Forces & Aerospace Museum, Spokane Regional Law Enforcement Museum, and researcher for the Spokane Police Department History Book Committee.
John enjoyed many hobbies until losing his vision; gardening, his pond with his fish, photography, genealogy, Light House on the Oregon Coast, he was a history buff, and was a football enthusiast with close friends.
His family and friends will always remember him as a caring, dedicated, selfless husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
John is survived by the love of his life, Norma Jean, children, John H. McGregor, Jr., (wife, Helen) and Carolyn Harrison (husband, Phil). Grandchildren, Heather McGregor, Jason McGregor, Kristy-Lee Hagle, and Lisa Hagle. Great grandchildren, Chiara, Amber, Emery, Taylor, and Riley. Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Diane, 12/26/59. His mother, Mildred, Stepfather George, his brothers (Don and William), and sister (Jeanne).
A Celebration of John's Life and Funeral is scheduled on June 1st, at Ball & Dodd, 5100 West Wellesley Avenue, Spokane, WA 99205. All are welcome to attend to celebrate and honor John’s life.
The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors (3rd floor) @ Holy Family Hospital, they ensured John was comfortable and free of pain. Flowers and donations (or in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in John’s honor to Tunnel to Towers, Joya).
